Cereals Canada has unveiled its 2024 New Wheat Crop Report, delivering crucial insights into the quality and functionality of Canadian wheat for both domestic and international customers. With an expected export volume of 25.4 million tonnes to over 80 countries, Canada remains a global leader, ranking as the world’s third-largest wheat exporter and the top supplier of high-quality, high-protein wheat for the second consecutive year.
Dean Dias, CEO of Cereals Canada, highlighted the significance of the report, stating, “This milestone reflects Canada’s unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional wheat quality and meeting the evolving demands of our global customers.”
Impressive Production and Quality Metrics
The 2024 wheat season commenced with favourable precipitation in Western Canada, enabling farmers to cultivate an impressive 34.3 million tonnes of high-quality wheat. This represents a four per cent rise in non-durum wheat production and an eight per cent increase in durum wheat production compared to the previous year.
Key findings from the report include:
- CWRS Wheat: Average protein content, with a significant majority graded No. 1 or No. 2.
- CWAD Wheat: High grading (No. 1 or No. 2), with protein content ranging from average to above average.
- CPSR Wheat: Consistent grading at No. 1 or No. 2 with average protein levels.
- CESRW Wheat: High grading levels (No. 1 or No. 2), though with slightly lower protein content than average.
The excellent quality across all wheat classes ensures that Canadian wheat continues to meet the rigorous demands of global buyers. Farmers and exporters are confident that this year’s crop will strengthen Canada’s reputation as a reliable supplier.
Engaging Global Markets Through Technical Missions
Cereals Canada’s dedication to strengthening the Canadian cereal industry’s competitiveness extends beyond the annual crop report. This year’s technical missions and trade initiatives will showcase Canadian wheat’s unparalleled attributes to 18 key markets, collectively worth $8.6 billion in 2023.
As part of these efforts, Cereals Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Grain Commission, value chain representatives, and producer groups, will host two customer webinars on 19 and 20 November to present the report’s technical data. These events will precede international trade missions designed to engage stakeholders, build long-term relationships, and address market access challenges.
Dias explained, “Our in-market outreach fosters strong connections with international buyers, cultivates industry advocates, and reinforces the value of Canadian wheat in meeting global food security needs.”
Collaborative Efforts for Accurate Insights
The New Wheat Crop Report is a result of combined efforts involving the Canadian Grain Commission, value chain members, and provincial grower commissions. Over 115 samples of Western Canadian wheat were analysed by eight grain exporters, with additional contributions from the Grain Farmers of Ontario, which assessed Eastern Canadian winter wheat for the report.
Building on Success
Canada’s sustained success in wheat production and export underscores its pivotal role in addressing global food demands. By focusing on quality, sustainability, and strong customer engagement, Canada ensures its wheat products remain a preferred choice worldwide. These efforts not only enhance food security but also drive the nation’s agricultural industry forward, reinforcing its global influence.
