Amazon Sets New Record for Prime Delivery Speeds

    Michelle WatsonBy Michelle Watson06/08/2024Updated:06/08/2024

Amazon has achieved its fastest Prime delivery speeds ever this year. Over 5 billion items have arrived the same or next day globally, marking a 30% increase from the previous year. This milestone highlights Amazon’s commitment to faster service and supporting small and medium-sized businesses.

    Record-Breaking Delivery Performance

Amazon’s delivery speeds have reached new heights in the U.S. and worldwide. This year, over 5 billion items were delivered within one or two days. Since the launch of Prime in 2005, the number of items eligible for free shipping has soared from 1 million to over 300 million in the U.S. Today, tens of millions of popular items offer Same-Day or One-Day Delivery. Prime members now enjoy 20 times more selection that can be delivered twice as fast compared to the program’s early days.

    Key Strategies for Speed Improvement

Amazon’s enhanced delivery speeds result from three key strategies:

    1. Expanding Same-Day Delivery Network
      • Amazon has increased its Same-Day Delivery network across the U.S. to over 120 metro areas. These new sites streamline operations, enabling rapid order picking and packing. This expansion ensures quick and reliable delivery for customers.
    2. Regionalizing Fulfillment Network
      • By regionalizing its fulfillment network, Amazon has reduced transportation distances between its sites and customers. This strategy has cut the distance items travel by nearly 10% year-over-year in the U.S., improving efficiency and delivery speed.
    3. Using Machine Learning for Inventory Management
      • Advanced machine learning algorithms help Amazon predict product demand and optimize inventory placement. These technologies allow Amazon to store products closer to customers, reducing transportation distances. The result is more efficient fulfillment and faster delivery times.

    Commitment to Employee Safety

Amazon prioritizes the safety of its employees and delivery partners. The company has invested over $750 million this year in technologies, resources, and training to improve safety. From 2019 to 2023, Amazon saw a 28% reduction in its U.S. recordable incident rate and a 75% decrease in the lost time incident rate, reflecting its focus on creating a safe working environment.

    Ongoing Innovations for Prime Members

Amazon continues to innovate and invest in Prime to enhance delivery speeds and customer experience. Members now have access to a vast selection of products with Same-Day and One-Day Delivery across more than 35 categories. This includes everyday essentials and unique items, ensuring that Prime members receive their orders quickly and efficiently.

Amazon remains committed to pushing the boundaries of delivery speed and efficiency. The company also focuses on sustainability, with significant reductions in plastic packaging in North America. These efforts complement Amazon’s ongoing service improvements and support for customers and partners.
