The Good Eating Company
The Good Eating Company is a leading player in the food service industry, dedicated to sustainable practices and exceptional service. Through innovative solutions and a focus on environmental responsibility, GEC strives to set new standards in the industry and support its clients’ sustainability goals.
As we progress through 2024, sustainable practices in the food service industry are taking centre stage. Following the recent discussions at COP28, experts have outlined the key focus areas where food service businesses from SMEs to global corporations—will be enhancing their sustainability efforts.
The $3 trillion food service industry continues to evolve, with sustainability at the forefront of its objectives. Companies are aiming to make significant strides in several critical areas to achieve their environmental and social goals.
The Supply Chain
One major focus is on refining the supply chain. Businesses are increasingly prioritising local farmers and suppliers to minimise carbon footprints and support regional economies. Alex Kristall, Managing Director of The Good Eating Company (GEC), emphasises, “By sourcing fresh, seasonal ingredients locally, companies not only contribute to the vitality of regional economies but also ensure the highest quality in their offerings. Our supply chain is essential for obtaining top-tier seasonal produce, and we are committed to sourcing only from suppliers who meet stringent quality standards.”
This approach also helps to reduce the environmental impact associated with long-distance transportation, further supporting the industry’s commitment to sustainability.
Zero-Waste Initiatives
Another critical area is zero-waste initiatives. Companies are adopting rigorous recycling programs and implementing efficient kitchen practices to minimise food waste. This includes repurposing leftover food and composting to reduce landfill impact. Kristall highlights, “Meticulous management of consumption to ensure minimal waste is integral. Additionally, repurposing leftover food has led to innovative solutions, such as increased food donations. Our sites contribute to Go Dhamic’s Feed Everyone Campaign in London, a testament to our commitment to reducing waste and supporting those in need.”
Efforts to achieve zero waste extend beyond food, encompassing all aspects of operations to ensure a holistic approach to sustainability.
Eco-Friendly Packaging
The shift towards eco-friendly packaging materials is also gaining momentum. The use of biodegradable and sustainable packaging is becoming increasingly common as businesses strive to reduce their environmental footprint. Kristall notes, ‘At GEC, we partner with Notpla for packaging solutions that are both compostable and recyclable. While removing single-use plastics poses challenges, the expanding availability of sustainable alternatives makes it feasible to implement these practices across the food service industry.”
Additionally, biodegradable printed labels are being used to further
reduce the environmental impact, ensuring that every aspect of packaging is
designed with sustainability in mind.
Empowering the Workforce
Empowering employees with knowledge about sustainable practices is another key priority. Providing educational resources about the importance of sustainable food and its benefits is expected to have a broader impact. Kristall explains, “Educating employees on the provenance of food and the benefits of a shorter supply chain is anticipated to create a ripple effect, influencing their personal choices and fostering a culture of sustainability within and beyond the workplace.”
By addressing these priorities, the food service industry aims to foster a culture of sustainability that benefits both the environment and the overall client and employee experience. As businesses continue to innovate and adapt, these practices will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable food service.
