Perpetual Atomics and QSA Global Unite

    Sam AllcockBy Sam Allcock22/01/2025

Perpetual Atomics is proud to announce a strategic collaboration with QSA Global, a leader in the design and production of commercial radioisotope sealed sources. This partnership is poised to advance the processing of americium into sealed sources for use in radioisotope power systems, including Radioisotope Heater Units (RHUs) and Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs). The collaboration will strengthen sustainable and reliable power solutions for space missions, particularly in the most extreme environments.

    A Partnership for Space Innovation

Perpetual Atomics, a spinout from the University of Leicester, brings over 20 years of expertise in space nuclear power systems and space exploration. The company is dedicated to delivering innovative and reliable power solutions for space missions, enabling operations in environments where traditional energy sources may fail, such as during periods of extended darkness. Their extensive knowledge and experience in this niche sector make them a key player in the ongoing advancements of space exploration technology.

QSA Global, known for its pioneering work in designing and producing commercial radioisotope sealed sources for industrial applications, is an ideal partner for Perpetual Atomics. With years of experience in handling the harshest terrestrial environments, QSA Global’s proven track record in source design and production aligns perfectly with Perpetual Atomics’ commitment to space technology.

    Enhancing Space Exploration Capabilities

Perpetual Atomics’ collaboration with QSA Global will pave the way for further advancements in radioisotope power systems, with a particular focus on improving the efficiency and reliability of RHUs and RTGs. These systems are essential for power generation on deep-space missions, where solar power is not feasible. The agreement will ensure that these critical systems remain operational in even the most challenging conditions.

Professor Richard Ambrosi, Chief Scientific Officer and Founder of Perpetual Atomics, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, “QSA Global’s team and facilities are unmatched in the industry, and there is a strong alignment between our organisations in terms of practical philosophy and approach. We are excited to expand our collaboration to support future space missions, both scientific and commercial.”

    Combining Expertise for Unprecedented Achievements

Dr. Joe Lapinskas, Director of Innovation and Marketing at QSA Global, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “We are thrilled to combine our decades of expertise in designing radioisotope sealed sources with Perpetual Atomics’ cutting-edge work in space nuclear technology. This collaboration will open doors to new opportunities for powering space exploration and scientific missions, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.”

Strengthening Industry Presence and Commercial Growth

Building on the momentum from its recent launch at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Milan, Perpetual Atomics is committed to expanding its influence within the space industry. Their mission, grounded in two decades of radioisotope power system development by the University of Leicester’s Space Nuclear Power Group, continues to fuel their drive for technological advancement and international partnerships.

Piers Slater, Executive Chairman and CEO of Perpetual Atomics, stated, “Partnering with QSA Global marks a pivotal moment for both the future of nuclear power in space and for Perpetual Atomics as we evolve from a spinout into a fully commercial entity. We are excited to scale our products and deliver these advanced solutions to the space sector.”
