Tyne and Wear Fire Service Embraces Next-Gen Control Room Tech

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is set to enhance its emergency response capabilities significantly with the deployment of a state-of-the-art cloud-hosted Control Room Solution (CRS) from Motorola Solutions. This initiative is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to digitise operations, streamline workflows, and improve response efficiency, particularly in light of increasing incidents of flooding and wildfires across the United Kingdom.

A Commitment to Safety and Efficiency

Phil Clark, Area Manager for Mobilising and Digital Transformation at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to community safety: “Our objective is to create one of the safest communities in the country. We are proud to be one of the fastest responding fire and rescue services in the U.K., with an impressive average response time of just 5 minutes and 58 seconds for dwelling fires.” This dedication to efficiency highlights the urgent need for cutting-edge technology to support rapid responses to emergencies.

    Integrating Advanced Technologies

The new cloud-hosted CRS will empower staff to access control room functionalities remotely, allowing them to securely log in from various locations. This capability facilitates the establishment of mobile command posts, which are crucial during large-scale incidents or disasters. Moreover, the CRS will integrate Motorola Solutions’ CommandCentral Evidence software, ensuring secure storage and management of vital communications, including voice recordings and incident data, all within a single unified platform. This integration is expected to streamline operations and enhance overall effectiveness.

    Collaboration for Enhanced Response

With 17 community fire stations, the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service serves over 1 million residents. Their responsibilities encompass a diverse range of emergencies, from primary and secondary fires to road traffic collisions and civil emergencies. The implementation of the CRS will enhance inter-agency collaboration, enabling seamless information exchange during joint operations with other fire and rescue services. “By working together more effectively, we can significantly improve our response times and operational efficiency in critical situations,” added Area Manager Clark.

    The Evolution of Emergency Services

According to Fergus Mayne, U.K. and Ireland Country Manager at Motorola Solutions, “The demands on fire and rescue services have evolved dramatically as they face increasingly complex incidents.” The new cloud-hosted CRS is designed to address these challenges by providing an intuitive and unified response system that consolidates all communications into one resilient and efficient work environment. This modernisation reflects the service’s commitment to adapting to the ever-changing landscape of emergency management.

    Future-Proofing Emergency Operations

As part of its long-term strategy, the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service plans to offer the newly created control room solution to other fire and rescue services. This collaborative approach not only strengthens individual agencies but also enhances regional capabilities in managing emergencies effectively, fostering a spirit of cooperation and shared knowledge across the sector.

The implementation of Motorola Solutions’ cloud-hosted Control Room Solution signifies a major advancement for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service. With improved technology, streamlined operations, and enhanced collaboration, the agency is well-equipped to meet the challenges of modern emergency response while continuing to prioritise the safety and well-being of the communities it serves.
