A Celebration of Art and Community Across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

The inaugural Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial, organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) under its Experience Abu Dhabi destination brand, has officially launched. Running until 30 April 2025, this transformative event positions Abu Dhabi and Al Ain as open-air galleries, blending creativity, culture, and community engagement.

    Exploring the Concept of ‘Public’

The Biennial delves into the meaning of ‘public’ within the context of Abu Dhabi, highlighting the role of art in fostering connections across diverse communities. Located in the bustling downtown areas of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the Biennial invites visitors and residents to engage with thought-provoking art installations that are both accessible and impactful.

    Art from Around the World

Featuring works by over 70 international and regional artists, the Biennial showcases installations and performances that explore the intersection of community, identity, and the environment. These site-specific pieces have been designed to resonate with local communities while sparking global conversations.

    Must-See Highlights

    Key artworks include:

    • Farah Al Qasimi’s Homesickness: An auditory sculpture immersing listeners in the sound of the sea, symbolising its cultural and environmental significance.
    • Seema Nusrat’s Floating Fragments: A terracotta-roofed house submerged by an imagined flood, reflecting urban life and the challenges of climate change.
    • Christopher Benton’s Where Lies My Carpet Is Thy Home: A reimagined Carpet Souk transformed into a lively community space that fosters connection and dialogue.
    • Afra Al Dhaheri’s D-constructing Collective Exhaustion: An immersive piece exploring time and presence through wooden structures, ropes, light, and sound.
    • Wael Al Awar’s Barzakh: A boundary-inspired installation that redefines materials and processes to shape future architecture.

    Interactive and Immersive Experiences

Designed for exploration on foot or by car, the Biennial’s curated routes lead visitors through prominent landmarks and hidden gems. These pathways celebrate Abu Dhabi’s warm hospitality and enduring traditions, connecting the city’s past and present through art.

    Second Phase Launches January 2025

In January 2025, the Biennial will introduce a new wave of art installations and activities, marking the second phase of this expansive cultural celebration. This evolution ensures a dynamic experience for repeat visitors and new attendees alike.

    Why It Matters

As Abu Dhabi continues to grow, the Biennial showcases its commitment to celebrating diversity and promoting accessibility in art. By creating spaces that welcome everyone, this initiative strengthens the connection between people, places, and creative expression, ensuring culture remains at the heart of the city’s identity.

    A Must-Visit Cultural Attraction

The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the city’s thriving cultural scene. Whether exploring solo or with loved ones, visitors will discover art that reflects the shared humanity and diverse heritage of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
