Korea Design Festival 2024 Highlights AI-Powered Creativity

    Sam AllcockBy Sam Allcock02/11/2024Updated:02/11/2024

The 22nd edition of Design Korea will kick off in Seoul in November 2024, hosted by the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy and organised by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion (KIDP). This year’s event will operate under the Korea Design Festival (KDF) brand, an integrated platform introduced in 2023 through collaboration between the Korean government, local authorities, and private enterprises. Design Korea 2024 continues a legacy dating back to its inception in 2003, showcasing the nation’s design innovation on a global stage.

Exploring the Intersection of AI and Design

This year’s theme, “How AI Works in Our Everyday Life?”, brings a timely focus on artificial intelligence and its transformative impact on the design industry. Design Korea 2024 aims to reveal the future potential of design within the AI landscape, while fostering collaboration between large corporations and smaller, specialised design companies to drive new business opportunities. The theme underscores AI’s role as a tool for designers to reimagine everyday solutions, ultimately contributing to a future marked by smarter, more efficient design.

    ‘Designers as Active Players’ Exhibition

Themed “Designers as Active Players,” the main exhibition will highlight the proactive role of designers in AI-powered ecosystems. Visitors will experience cutting-edge design concepts and insights from designers applying AI to their creative processes. Divided into four key sections, the exhibition allows attendees to interact with AI-driven projects, from product innovation to sustainable design, demonstrating how AI can reshape industries and improve everyday life.

Enterprise Section: Driving Investment and Innovation

In the enterprise section, approximately 45 companies will participate, representing both leading corporations and pioneering startups, such as Samsung Card, Cebien, Seoul Dairy Cooperative, Sizeof, and Pipe & Pipes. These companies will present investment opportunities, fostering business creation through networking sessions with potential buyers. By uniting design talent with industry needs, this section offers a powerful platform for growth and collaboration within the design ecosystem.

Job Fair Section: Opportunities for Emerging Talent

A dedicated job fair will provide aspiring designers with invaluable guidance, including job consultations and information on available positions within the design sector. This section aims to bridge the gap between young designers and established industry leaders, providing career guidance and highlighting 20 emerging designers in a special showcase. By connecting employers with fresh talent, the fair supports the development of the next generation of design professionals.

Spotlight on Government Initiatives and Industry Insights

In addition to private-sector engagement, a special section will focus on government-backed design initiatives that demonstrate Korea’s commitment to advancing the industry. At the Design Korea 2024 International Conference, industry experts will discuss the future of AI and its integration into design. Renowned speakers include Geoff Mulgan from University College London, Kevin Walker from Coventry University, Kaya Kim from LG Electronics’ Design Management Center, and Ovetta Sampson, Google’s Director of User Experience Machine Learning. These thought leaders will share their expertise on topics such as AI’s potential for reshaping user experience and product innovation.

Side Programs in the Talk Hall

The Talk Hall will host interactive side programs, including IR pitching sessions, design talks, performance showcases, and employment seminars. These sessions will offer attendees practical insights into the design industry, allowing them to exchange ideas and build connections within the sector. The event’s hands-on approach aims to engage participants, providing opportunities to explore the latest developments in design and AI.

Design Korea’s Vision for the Future

Doohyun Cho, Executive Managing Director of Capacity Enhancement at KIDP, highlighted the significance of the event: “Design Korea 2024 will provide a unique opportunity to directly experience diverse content that leads trends in the design industry and highlights the role of designers in the AI ecosystem.” By showcasing the intersection of design and AI, Design Korea 2024 will pave the way for innovation, illustrating Korea’s prominent role on the global design stage.
