Research Reveals Rising Trend in Private Healthcare Use Across the UK
Recent findings by the Independent Healthcare Providers Network (IHPN) highlight a growing trend among Brits turning to private healthcare. The latest IHPN Going Private report reveals that over half of the UK population have friends or family who have used private healthcare, while nearly a third (32%) have accessed private healthcare themselves. In specific regions like the East Midlands, Northern Ireland, and Wales, these figures are even higher.
Private Healthcare Increasingly Mainstream in the UK
David Hare, Chief Executive of IHPN, notes that private healthcare is becoming mainstream, with many Brits choosing private providers to access healthcare services more swiftly and conveniently. “Figures show that most people in the UK know someone who has used private health services. This shift reflects a growing view that private healthcare offers an accessible, timely option for healthcare,” said Hare.
Primary Reasons for Choosing Private Healthcare
According to the report, the main reason individuals opt for private healthcare is the inability to secure an NHS appointment quickly (45%). Ease of booking private appointments (27%) and employer-provided health insurance (20%) also contribute. Additionally, 50% of people believe private healthcare offers better accessibility, and 17% feel the quality of private services is superior.
The most common treatments accessed through private healthcare include doctor consultations (45%), diagnostic treatments like scans (45%), appointments with healthcare professionals (35%), GP visits (34%), minor outpatient operations (25%), major inpatient surgeries (16%), and ongoing care for severe conditions such as cancer treatment (5%).
Five Key Steps When Considering Private Healthcare
For those considering private healthcare, David Hare recommends five steps to make informed decisions:
- Do Your Research
Begin by reviewing inspection reports from national care regulators like the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in England, or consult the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) for valuable insights. Scotland and Wales also have their own healthcare inspectorates for information on quality and standards. - Explore Payment Plans and Options
Many providers offer flexible payment options, making private healthcare more affordable than expected. These plans allow patients to spread the cost of treatment over time. - Find Local Providers
Seek a consultant within your area through resources like IHPN’s ‘Find a Member’ page or phin.org.uk. With hundreds of private healthcare options across the UK, patients shouldn’t need to travel far. - Make the Choice That’s Right for You
Private healthcare puts the patient in control. Seek recommendations from friends and family, consult CQC or PHIN ratings, and involve your GP for support in finding the right specialist. - Book a Consultation
Before deciding, schedule a consultation with your chosen provider. This opportunity allows you to ask questions, understand treatment paths, and get personalised advice. Consider bringing a trusted companion to the consultation for additional support.
Private Healthcare as a Preferred Choice
This report underscores a significant shift toward private healthcare in the UK, reflecting changing perspectives on health service accessibility. As more individuals explore private healthcare options, informed decision-making and patient empowerment are paramount.
