DSM’s New Eco Data Centre Sets Sustainability Standard

    Wesley DunnBy Wesley Dunn09/10/2024Updated:09/10/2024

DSM Group, a leader in IT infrastructure and data management, proudly announces the opening of its flagship Eco Data Centre in Peterborough. This state-of-the-art facility addresses the rising demand for sustainable data storage and IT services, focusing on carbon emission reduction through renewable energy, advanced cooling technologies, and environmental stewardship.

    Event Highlights

The launch event was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Peterborough, Sam Carling MP, industry leaders, customers, and local community members. CEO Mike Richardson emphasized the importance of the project, stating: “The Eco Data Centre represents a crucial milestone for DSM and the IT sector, establishing a new standard for sustainability in data services by integrating high-performance technology with a robust commitment to environmental protection.”

    Energy Efficiency at Its Core

Central to the DSM Eco Data Centre is an innovative strategy focused on energy efficiency. A 200kW solar farm has been installed on-site, significantly reducing reliance on traditional energy sources while generating renewable power for daily operations. This initiative underlines the facility’s ambition to lead by example in minimising the carbon footprint associated with IT infrastructure.

    Innovative Cooling Technology

To improve energy efficiency, DSM has incorporated U-Systems water-cooled racks into its infrastructure. These innovative racks provide effective heat management using water-based cooling, consuming significantly less energy than traditional air-cooling systems. This technology is vital for maintaining operational excellence while minimising environmental impact.

    Tailored Solutions for Modern Businesses

The DSM Eco Data Centre meets the demands of contemporary businesses by providing colocation services that ensure secure, adaptable, and scalable data hosting solutions. With continuous 24/7 monitoring, advanced security measures, and resilient infrastructure, the centre ensures 99.999% uptime for mission-critical operations.

    Comprehensive Recovery Facilities

In addition to colocation, the Eco Data Centre features over 500 fully equipped workplace recovery positions across four dedicated suites. These provide a backup operational environment for businesses during emergencies or disruptions. The facility also includes an 18-seat executive boardroom and a 50-seat conferencing suite, making it an ideal location for corporate clients requiring high-end facilities for recovery and strategic planning.

    Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

DSM’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond technology. The Eco Data Centre is set within a site that is being developed into an onsite nature reserve, designed to enhance local biodiversity. The reserve features a large lake, serving a dual purpose as a natural habitat for wildlife and playing an essential role in the centre’s water management and cooling systems, optimising conditions for the water-cooled racks.

    Community Engagement and Charity

The lake was also the centrepiece of a charity lake dip event aimed at raising money for local charities: Little Miracles and Bliss. DSM Group has been actively involved in fundraising, contributing an additional £500 to reach their £1,000 target.

    Strategic Location

Strategically located in Peterborough, the Eco Data Centre is less than 50 minutes by train from London and easily accessible via major trunk roads, including the A1M, A605, and A47. This prime location enables the facility to efficiently serve businesses across the UK, providing them with a high-performance, eco-friendly data solution.

    Future Expansion Plans

In the future, DSM is set to embark on a second phase of growth aimed at enhancing the Eco Data Centre’s overall capacity and functionality. This upcoming phase will maintain a strong emphasis on sustainability, further solidifying DSM’s position as a frontrunner in environmentally responsible IT infrastructure.
