Cost of Brushing Teeth Rises: New Research Reveals Price Hike

    John MorseBy John Morse26/07/2024Updated:26/07/2024

The price of maintaining a perfect smile is on the rise, with dental product costs increasing by eight percent in recent months, according to new research.

    Tracking Dental Product Prices

    Price Intelligence by Skuuudle

Price intelligence company Skuuudle has monitored the prices of over 2,000 dental products over the past six months. Their findings indicate that while retailers strive to keep children’s toothbrushes affordable, the cost for adult products has seen a notable increase.

    Cost Breakdown

The cost of children’s toothbrushes has risen by six percent since September, whereas adult toothbrushes and other dental products have seen an eight percent increase. This highlights a significant price disparity between products for different age groups.

    Retailers’ Efforts to Control Prices

    Expert Insights from Skuuudle

Experts at Skuuudle suggest that the price increases reflect retailers’ efforts to keep essential oral hygiene products affordable. They are particularly focused on maintaining the price of children’s products below inflation levels, addressing concerns about the nation’s youth’s oral health.

    A National Concern

Camilla Kingdom, President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, recently described the state of children’s dental health in Britain as a ‘national disgrace.’ She argued that for many UK families, toothbrushes and other oral products are becoming luxury items amidst the ongoing cost of living crisis.

    Retailers’ Strategies

    Balancing Act

A spokesperson for Skuuudle noted that retailers are doing their best to avoid pricing essential dental products out of reach for families. Despite the need to raise prices across many essential items, the rate of increase for dental products, especially those for children, has been comparatively lower.

    Maintaining Supply

“Retailers are managing to keep their shelves well-stocked with dental products despite the price hikes,” the spokesperson said. “Children’s toothbrushes and other products for babies and toddlers have seen a six percent increase since September, while adult products have experienced steeper rises.”

    Essential, Not Luxury

The spokesperson emphasized that dental products should not be viewed as luxury items. “Any suggestion that these products are becoming unaffordable for families is very concerning,” he said. “Retailers are working hard to keep prices reasonable, despite facing their own rising costs.”

    Comprehensive Price Tracking

    Skuuudle’s Methodology

Skuuudle tracked the prices of 2,000 dental products for both children and adults across 14 different retailers since September 1, 2022. Their market-leading pricing data analytics help retailers understand the markets they operate in, enabling them to provide optimal prices for consumers despite rising inflation.

    Detailed Insights

This data allows retailers to compare like-for-like products and accurately track price changes across different retailers. Such insights are crucial for accurately monitoring the prices of a large number of dental products, which often have many small variables differentiating them.

    Retailers’ Challenge

A Skuuudle spokesperson acknowledged the challenging balancing act retailers face in pricing, needing to consider the needs of customers, suppliers, and the supply chain. With over 54 products for children available and efforts to keep prices below inflation, the cost of brushing teeth may be rising, but the supply remains strong.

    Conclusion

The rising costs of dental products, especially for adults, are a reflection of the broader economic challenges. However, retailers are making concerted efforts to keep children’s dental products as affordable as possible, ensuring that maintaining oral hygiene remains accessible for all families.
