Manchester-Based Charge-M8 Introduces Groundbreaking Libra EV Load Balancing Solution Globally

    Sam AllcockBy Sam Allcock08/10/2024

Charge-M8, an expert in electric vehicle (EV) charging, has launched a new dynamic load balancing device named Libra, which it claims to be unique in the global market. Libra, available from September, enables multiple brands of EV chargers to be load balanced simultaneously, using integrated Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) platforms.

Ian Hughes, Technical Director at Charge-M8, explained: “For our commercial EV chargers, we purposely avoided using directly connected load balancing because of issues concerning reliability and accuracy over long distances. In our experience as installers, the distance between the incoming supply and the EV chargers can be substantial, particularly in commercial settings, making the use of ‘directly connected’ CT clamps impractical.”

Developing a stand-alone device that is both hardware-agnostic and compatible with OCPP platforms was the logical step to ensure future-proof installations, both for new setups and retrofits.

Hughes added, “Making the installation process as easy as possible for installers was one of our main priorities. The Libra device includes 4G GSM communication as standard, with Ethernet and Wi-Fi as fallback options, making it incredibly straightforward to install.”

He continued: “When we consulted with our OCPP platform partners and installers, they raised the following queries:

    · Q: Can voltage readings and current direction be monitored to track both import and export?

A: We included this feature in our development.

    · Q: Is there a maximum number of CT clamps that can be used with Libra?

A: We offer CT clamps rated up to 120A, with higher ratings of up to 400A available on request. For larger supplies, we provide optional Rogowski coils (110mmØ) suitable for systems of 1kVA and above.

    · Q: How easy is it to commission?

A: We’ve incorporated the same 4.3” touchscreen as seen on Charge-M8’s commercial EV chargers, making commissioning simple and user-friendly. There’s no need for apps or frustrating Wi-Fi hotspots.”

Julian Smith, CEO of Charge-M8, commented: “The launch of the Libra DLB Device represents a key milestone in our journey towards becoming a leading manufacturer of commercial EV charging solutions, supported by top-notch commissioning and technical assistance for the global installer network.

“After extensive prototype testing across the UK, Europe, UAE, US, and Canada since November 2023, the device is ready to roll out, with seamless integration for over 40 OCPP platforms and easy installation that will appeal to installers worldwide.”

Charge-M8 is quickly becoming a trusted name for workplace EV charging solutions. Approved under the OZEV grant scheme for both domestic and commercial installations, the company offers technical support through fully qualified installers. Recently recognised under the Buy with Confidence scheme by UK Trading Standards, Charge-M8 is dedicated to providing excellent customer service and upholding the highest standards of integrity.

In a market with many EV charging and load balancing choices, it’s always worth consulting a true expert, rather than a call centre.
