    BWY’s Yoga Experience-Unwind in History

Transformative Yoga Sessions Set in a Historic Landmark

The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) was delighted to announce its collaboration with English Heritage’s Bolsover Castle to offer unique yoga sessions within the ancient walls of this historic site, which commenced on Saturday, 14 September 2024. This initiative aligned with BWY’s vision to make yoga accessible to everyone, welcoming participants of all ages and abilities to experience the transformative benefits of yoga in a stunning historical setting.

    Inclusive Yoga for All

Led by Sally Kennedy, Midlands Regional Officer for BWY, these two-hour yoga sessions were designed to foster inclusivity. BWY funded five spaces specifically for vulnerable members of the community, which were allocated through recommendations from local support services. In addition, a sliding payment scale started at just £15, ensuring that financial barriers did not prevent anyone from participating.

Each yoga ticket included entry to Bolsover Castle, typically priced at £12.70, allowing participants to explore the castle’s rich history before or after their session. This initiative formed part of a larger community outreach programme at Bolsover Castle, which included creative writing workshops designed to support the mental health of young people.

    Connecting Wellness with History

Collaborating with an English Heritage site presented a wonderful opportunity for BWY, and we were excited to offer yoga in such an inspiring setting,” said BWY Chair Diana O’Reilly. These sessions exemplified our deep commitment to making yoga inclusive and accessible for everyone. Participants not only benefited from the wellness aspects of yoga but also cultivated a deeper connection to the castle and its fascinating history.

Bolsover Castle, with its enchanting architecture and storied past, provided a perfect backdrop for yoga sessions. The tranquil atmosphere of the castle grounds allowed participants to unwind and rejuvenate while immersing themselves in the cultural heritage of the area.

    A Unique Experience for Visitors

Joel Wileman, Bolsover Castle Supervisor at English Heritage, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating: “Our collaboration with BWY supported our mission to reimagine this historic site not just as a venue for preserving and sharing its remarkable story, but as a lively, communal space for everyone to enjoy. These yoga sessions invited new audiences to engage with the castle in an innovative way while offering regular visitors a unique perspective on this iconic landmark.”

The combination of yoga practice and historical exploration provided a holistic experience, allowing individuals to improve their physical and mental well-being while appreciating the cultural significance of Bolsover Castle.

As the sessions took place, participants were encouraged to secure their spots early due to limited availability. Whether a seasoned yogi or a complete beginner, everyone was welcome to join this enriching experience that promised to uplift both body and mind.
