From Farm Boy to Rugby Star: Drostdy Scholarship Awarded

    Graham ParkerBy Graham Parker11/09/2024Updated:11/09/2024

SOS Africa is delighted to announce that Henwhill Scholtz, a young athlete sponsored by the charity, has been awarded a prestigious rugby scholarship by Drostdy Technical College, effective January 2025. This accolade represents a significant achievement in Henwhill’s burgeoning sports career and highlights the impactful support provided by SOS Africa.

    A Year of Exceptional Achievements

Over the past 12 months, Henwhill Scholtz has demonstrated extraordinary talent and dedication in rugby. His journey has been marked by substantial progress and recognition. Henwhill was selected for the Under 12 Boland regional rugby team and recently earned a place on the Boland Under 13s 7s team. His performances at Craven Week in June were particularly notable, showcasing his impressive speed and skill. These achievements culminated in the offer of a scholarship from Drostdy Technical College, an opportunity that will further his development both academically and athletically.

    Continuing a Legacy of Excellence

Henwhill’s scholarship is a continuation of the success stories fostered by SOS Africa. This follows the example of Elvino, a former SOS Africa student who attended Drostdy from January 2021 and subsequently received a full scholarship to Durban High. Drostdy Technical College is renowned for its high academic and sports standards, and Henwhill will benefit from this environment as he embarks on this new chapter. The college will provide him with top-tier academic instruction and advanced sports coaching, essential for his growth and future success.

    Fostering Talent Through Sponsorship

SOS Africa’s child sponsorship programmes are designed to support students in achieving excellence in both academics and extracurricular activities. The organisation’s partnerships with schools like Drostdy aim to inspire students to pursue their passions while receiving a solid educational foundation. For Henwhill, rugby has always been a central focus. His excitement about his future is palpable, as he expressed:

“I am incredibly thrilled to pursue my dreams and embrace this opportunity to its fullest. Representing such a prestigious school is a dream come true for me, especially considering my humble beginnings as a farm boy. Rugby brings me immense joy, and I am devoted to this passion. My ultimate goal is to wear the green and gold jersey and play for the Springboks, making my family and supporters proud.” – Henwhill Scholtz, SOS Africa Elgin, Grade 7

    Pride and Support from Family

Henwhill’s parents, Henry and Wilma Scholtz, have been integral in his journey, providing unwavering support and celebrating his accomplishments. They shared their heartfelt gratitude:

“Seeing our son’s accomplishments, including his selection for both the U12 Boland Team and the U13 7s Boland Team, brought tears of joy to our eyes. We are overwhelmed with pride and gratitude for being his parents. Our heartfelt thanks go to SOS Africa and St Michael’s Primary for their unwavering support and investment in his development. They have played a pivotal role in shaping his character and nurturing the incredible person he is becoming. We are also profoundly grateful to Henwhill’s SOS Africa sponsors for their steadfast belief in him.” – Henry and Wilma Scholtz

    Expressive Emotions

As Henwhill prepares to embark on his new journey at Drostdy Technical College, SOS Africa staff and fellow students express mixed emotions. While there is sadness at seeing him leave, there is also immense excitement and pride in his future prospects. The scholarship is not only a testament to Henwhill’s hard work and talent but also a reflection of the support provided by SOS Africa and its sponsors. The entire SOS Africa community looks forward to following Henwhill’s progress as he continues to chase his dreams and achieve new heights in rugby and beyond.
