We express ourselves, share our interests, and even promote brands on social media every day without thinking anything of it. However, for royal family members, navigating the Royals Cantt digital landscape comes with a unique set of restrictions and limitations. Do you know what you can do on social media that royals can’t?

Trevor Cooke, the privacy expert at Earthweb, reveals the activities that are off-limits for royals on social media.

    Brand Promotions And Endorsements

While influencers and celebrities often leverage their social media platforms for brand partnerships and endorsements, royal family members are prohibited from engaging in these activities. The Royal Family’s official website explicitly states that members of the Royal Family are not allowed to promote or endorse any product, service, or company. This restriction aims to uphold the impartiality and integrity of the monarchy, preventing any perception of favouritism or commercial influence.

    Political Expression

Trevor comments, ‘While most of us are entitled to express our political views freely on social media, members of the royal family are expected to remain politically neutral.’ Expressing partisan opinions or endorsing political candidates could compromise the monarchy’s impartiality and Royals Cantt raise concerns about them having undue influence on the UK’s democratic processes. As such, royals must refrain from engaging in political discourse on social media.

Selfies And Personal Social Media Accounts

‘Members of the royal family are discouraged from taking selfies with fans or having personal social media accounts,’ reveals Trevor. ‘While such interactions may seem innocuous, they can blur the boundaries between royalty and the public, potentially undermining the dignity and mystique of the Royals Cantt monarchy.’ Additionally, personal social media accounts could pose security risks and lead to accidental breaches of protocol.

    Photography In Certain Locations

Royals are often prohibited from taking photographs in certain sensitive or private locations, for example, inside royal residences. This restriction is in place to protect the royal family’s privacy and security and prevent unauthorised access to sensitive areas. While commoners may freely document their surroundings, royals must adhere to strict protocols to maintain confidentiality and decorum.
