On September 29, 2024, the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower reached a remarkable milestone by welcoming its 100 millionth visitor, reinforcing its status as a prominent symbol of Shanghai’s skyline and a major attraction in the realm of global tourism. This achievement not only highlights the enduring appeal of the landmark but also underscores Shanghai’s position as a top-tier destination on the international tourism stage.
The honour of being the 100 millionth visitor went to Peter Baur, a retired math and physics teacher from Germany. Baur received a commemorative certificate from Deputy Mayor Liu Duo and a miniature replica of the tower from Fang Shizhong, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China. In an interview, Baur expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the recognition. He shared that he and his wife, having recently retired, embarked on a journey to China, where they were captivated by the panoramic views and rich cultural experiences Shanghai has to offer. Baur promised to return, motivated by his admiration for the city’s diverse attractions and its hospitable atmosphere.

Introducing the ‘SHANGHAI’ Pop-Up Installation
Complementing this significant achievement, the ‘SHANGHAI’ pop-up installation has recently been unveiled, captivating visitors with its stunning artistic expression. This initiative, spearheaded by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, features the innovative work of artist Tore Claesson. The installation combines vibrant colours and geometric shapes, reflecting Shanghai’s dynamic leadership in technology and business through its upward-pointing triangles, while the S-shaped curve represents the significance of the Huangpu River.
Claesson’s creation encapsulates the essence of Shanghai’s urban culture and is expected to draw considerable attention from visitors eager to capture memorable photographs. In recognition of his artistic contributions, Zhong Xiaomin, the director of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, presented Claesson with gifts that embody the spirit of Shanghai.
