Interior Designer Reveals Biggest Summer Décor Mistake to Avoid

    Graham ParkerBy Graham Parker03/08/2024Updated:03/08/2024

    The Major Mistake to Avoid

As summer arrives, there is a natural inclination to infuse homes with the vibrancy of the season. However, selecting the wrong colours can create an atmosphere that feels less than inviting. Zara O’Hare, an interior designer at Land of Rugs, identifies a significant mistake commonly made in summer décor.

The key error to avoid is the use of dark colours. These shades, more suited to winter, can make spaces feel heavy and less welcoming during the sunny season.

“Using darker colours can impart a gloomy mood that clashes with the bright and airy essence of summer,” O’Hare highlights. For instance, dark green may suggest a wintery atmosphere, whereas dark orange could bring to mind Halloween.Opt for Lighter, Airier Colours

Choosing lighter and more airy colours can enhance the summer ambiance. Such hues contribute to a cheerful and fresh atmosphere that aligns with the season.

Beyond wall colours, consider updating other décor elements. Replace heavy throws with lighter linen alternatives and choose accent cushions in soft, neutral tones like muted yellow, blue, and cream. These colours reflect the essence of summer, reminiscent of sunshine, clear skies, and coastal serenity.

Avoid Overusing a Single Colour Scheme

Relying exclusively on one colour scheme can lead to a monotonous look. While cream is versatile, an overabundance of this shade can make a space seem bland. Adding complementary colours, such as green and gold, can elevate the room’s aesthetic and introduce a touch of sophistication.

Integrating a few different shades can significantly enhance the space,  O’Hare advises. Pairing cream with touches of green and gold can add an elegant and vibrant touch to the room.

By adhering to these recommendations, homeowners can create summer décor that truly celebrates the season’s vibrant and refreshing character.
