Ufton Court, an esteemed historical and outdoor education centre in Berkshire, has achieved a significant milestone by receiving the prestigious Sandford Award for Heritage Learning. Presented on 10 December 2024 at the iconic Kensington Palace, this accolade celebrates Ufton Court’s innovative approach to making history come alive for learners of all ages.

A National Recognition of Educational Innovation

The Sandford Awards, overseen by Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) in partnership with the Heritage Education Trust and supported by Historic Royal Palaces, recognised 36 winners this year. Among them were renowned institutions such as Windsor Castle and the National Army Museum, illustrating the wide-reaching impact of heritage education in preserving history and inspiring learning.

Speaking about the award, Professor Andrew Jackson of BGU highlighted the dedication of those in the sector:
“The success of this year’s winners reflects their passion and creativity in ensuring heritage sites remain central to education. It is a privilege to celebrate the impact these organisations have on learners of all ages.”

Ufton Court: A Hub of Living History

Located near Reading, Ufton Court is a 500-year-old Tudor manor house set within 44 acres of ancient woodlands. As a registered charity, the Ufton Court Educational Trust has developed an unparalleled reputation for delivering experiential history programmes. These experiences are carefully designed to align with national curriculum topics, ensuring students benefit from both educational enrichment and hands-on learning.

The Sandford Award judges commended Ufton Court’s unique ability to immerse students in history: “Ufton Court delivers an engaging journey into history, sparking curiosity and creativity through immersive, hands-on activities. Whether creating Viking shields or exploring a Tudor Manor, students are fully engaged, developing skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and critical thinking.”

    Combining Nature and History

Beyond its history programmes, Ufton Court integrates outdoor learning into its educational model. Nature-based activities take place across the estate, allowing children to explore the environment while enhancing their personal development. From teamwork challenges to storytelling sessions under ancient trees, Ufton Court combines academic learning with experiences that build confidence and resilience.

Setting a Benchmark in Heritage Learning

The Sandford Award is a testament to Ufton Court’s ongoing efforts to provide inspiring and inclusive education. This accolade highlights the site’s ability to create memorable learning experiences that resonate with students long after their visit.

Dr. Tracy Borman, OBE, Chief Executive of the Heritage Education Trust, noted the impact of this year’s winners: “These awards recognise the commitment of heritage organisations to education, and I offer my sincere congratulations to all the winners.  Ufton Court’s innovative methods are a shining example of what can be achieved in this field.”

    A Future Rooted in Excellence

As Ufton Court celebrates this achievement, it remains committed to its mission of inspiring the next generation through meaningful and engaging learning opportunities. By combining historical immersion with nature-based activities, the centre continues to make a lasting impact on students’ educational journeys.
