Celebrating a Century: LKW WALTER’s Legacy of Innovation

    Graham ParkerBy Graham Parker21/09/2024Updated:21/09/2024

LKW WALTER proudly celebrates its centenary, highlighting a hundred years of achievements rooted in innovation and a dedication to sustainability. As a fully family-owned business, it has become a pioneering force in the European transport and logistics sector.

    A Leading Player in Transport

Headquartered in Wiener Neudorf and Kufstein, LKW WALTER, part of the WALTER GROUP, stands out as one of Europe’s foremost transport companies. The firm manages over 8,000 full truck loads (FTL) daily across combined transport routes. It focuses on various sectors, including consumer goods, wood and paper, chemicals, metals, automotive, and electronics. By connecting key economic centres and industrial hubs across Europe, LKW WALTER ensures efficient intracontinental supply.

Celebrating the Past While Shaping the Future

What began in 1924 as a modest one-man haulage business in Vienna has now evolved into a company employing over 1,650 individuals from more than 40 countries. This rich cultural diversity not only enhances customer service but also fosters an open and dynamic corporate environment, recognised by accolades such as ‘Great Place to Work.’ The company will celebrate this milestone with its dedicated employees.

Initially focused on groupage transport, LKW WALTER expanded its operations internationally nearly 30 years later with its first transport to Italy, paving the way for significant international growth. The entry into combined transport in 1984 marked a pivotal moment in the company’s trajectory. Since the turn of the millennium, digital solutions have been at the forefront of its development, demonstrating the pioneering spirit that continues to drive the organisation.

    Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability

Herbert Traxler, CEO of LKW WALTER, stated, “Our success relies on continuous innovation and an unwavering commitment to sustainability. In recognition of our contributions to the Austrian economy, we were awarded the national coat of arms in 1986. We take great pride in our role as a family business serving the economy and the public in Austria.”

Employees: The Heart of the Organisation

At LKW WALTER, employees are integral to the company’s transformation and overall success. Innovative strategies are developed collaboratively with partners and clients, paving the way for a more creative, sustainable, and efficient transport industry.

    Combined Transport: Sustainable Solutions

LKW WALTER has championed combined transport for over 40 years, emerging as a leader in environmentally friendly transport solutions. By integrating rail/road and short sea shipping, the company achieves an impressive annual reduction of over 329,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The corporate strategy for 2030 aims to expand FTLs in combined transport while decreasing the proportion of empty kilometres, reinforcing its dedication to sustainability.

Looking Ahead to the Next Century

The leadership team, consisting of Herbert Traxler, Michael Krainthaler, Alois Höfler, and Alexander Sobota, is focused on steering LKW WALTER into the future. Innovation and digitalisation will remain central to the corporate strategy. Recent technological advancements include the digital consignment note, or eCMR, which will replace 1.5 million paper documents in international transport.

Alexander Sobota, CEO, concluded, “Our vision is to transform the transport industry through technological innovation and sustainable practices. Our integrated digital solutions enable seamless transport management, fostering significant efficiency gains. With our expertise in digital transformation, we are poised for success in the next century.”
